Further Information:

Family information: Father a cement manufacturer.

Additional Information: Elizabeth was arrested and imprisoned in 1908 after calling at 10 Downing Street to ask the Prime Minister directly why ? in response to the demand to women's suffrage ? he had instead promised more votes for men. She took part in the illegal boycott of the 1911 goverment census survey, which was encouraged by the Women's Freedom League (WFL) and the WSPU (though they had rejected the idea to begin with). Elizabeth also refused to pay taxes to the government on several occasions, as she said that without a vote, she had no say in how those taxes were spent. She was imprisoned. Elizabeth was arrested in 1913, with the leader of the WFL, Charlotte Despard, when leading a march to Westminster. By 1913, she was the WFL's honorary treasurer.

Other Suffrage Activities: Elizabeth's feminist interests continued during the First World War. For instance, she opposed the 40D Regulation, which involved the compulsory examination of women suspected to have transmitted venereal disease to a British soldier (the men themselves were not so examined or held responsible). In 1923, she attended the International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Equal Citizenship held in Paris, and ran publicity campaigns for the Equal Political Rights Campaign Committee, which worked for equal votes for men and women ? not achieved until 1928.
